Stripe Closed Your Account Over Your Business Model? How to Appeal
Stripe told you it cannot support your business, or it paused your account for a review. Here is how to read the notice, gather what Stripe needs, write an appeal that gets read and decide when to stop and move on.

Quick answer
Read the notice for the exact reason, respond inside the deadline through the channel Stripe names, and answer only what it asked. Explain what the business does, show evidence (website, contracts, delivery proof, refund policy), and correct the real cause. If the message says Stripe cannot support the business model, an appeal rarely changes it, and the practical next step is a different processor, not a new Stripe account.
What exactly did Stripe tell you?
Start with the wording. Three messages look similar and mean different things. A request for information means the review is still open and you can fix it. A restriction or pause on payouts means Stripe is holding funds or limiting activity while it decides. A termination for business model or policy reasons means Stripe has decided it cannot support the business.
Copy the message, the date and any reference number into a document. You will quote it in your reply. Note any deadline: some notices give a number of days to respond, and silence is read as agreement that the review can end badly.
Can a business-model decision be reversed?
Sometimes, but be realistic. If Stripe misunderstood what you sell, evidence can change the outcome. If Stripe understood correctly and the activity is on its prohibited list, an appeal will not make it supportable. The Services Agreement lets Stripe end the relationship, and it does not have to give a long explanation.
Ask yourself honestly which situation you are in before you spend weeks on an appeal.
What should an appeal contain?
Keep it short, factual and organised. A reviewer reads many of these. A good appeal usually includes:
- Who you are: legal entity name, country, the person who owns and controls it
- What the business does in plain words, with your website address
- How a customer buys, when they receive what they paid for, and how they get a refund
- Evidence: invoices, delivery proof, contracts, supplier details, policies, screenshots of the checkout
- What happened and what you have changed, such as a clearer refund policy or a different statement descriptor
- A direct request: please review the decision with the attached evidence
Never invent facts or alter documents. A false statement ends any chance of reinstatement and can create legal problems.
How do I get my money back if the account is closed?
When Stripe closes an account it normally holds a balance for a period to cover disputes and refunds before paying the rest out to the verified bank account. The length of the hold depends on the card networks' dispute windows and on your history. Check your account notices and Stripe's payout documentation, and make sure the bank details on file are correct and are in the name of the business.
If a payout fails because the bank account is closed or does not match the verified entity, Stripe cannot release the funds until you update it, so fix that first.
Why should I not open a second account?
Opening another account after a closure, often under a new name or a new company, is the fastest way to lose any funds still held and to be marked permanently. Stripe links accounts through identity, bank, device and website signals. The Services Agreement treats it as a breach.
What are the legitimate options after a closure?
If the model is allowed and the closure was a verification or documentation problem, fix the cause and ask for a review. If the model is not supported by Stripe, look at processors whose rules fit it, for example a merchant of record for digital products, a processor that supports your category, or a local gateway in your market. Each has its own rules and its own approval process, and none is a guaranteed route.
Choose based on your business model first and the fees second. A cheap processor that closes you in six months costs more than a fair one that does not.
How do I prevent this from happening again?
Prevention is the same checklist you should have used before applying.
- Describe the business accurately, everywhere, every time
- Keep disputes and refunds low and answer every dispute with evidence
- Publish clear terms, a refund policy and contact details
- Use a legal entity whose name, address and bank account match your documents
- Tell your processor before big changes in volume or product
What does a good appeal look like in outline?
Structure matters more than eloquence. A reviewer should find each answer in seconds. A workable outline:
- Subject line with your account identifier and the date of the notice
- One paragraph: who you are and what the business does
- One paragraph: the reason Stripe gave, in its words, and your understanding of it
- A short list of the facts that answer it, each pointing to an attached document
- A paragraph on what you have changed, if anything
- A closing request for a review and a way to contact you
Which evidence works for which type of business?
- Digital products and software: product pages, pricing, a sample of the delivered product, terms and a refund policy, and evidence of how customers get access
- Physical goods: supplier invoices, shipping labels, tracking, returns address and delivery times
- Services: signed contracts or scopes of work, invoices, delivery evidence and client contact details you are allowed to share
- Subscriptions: the full checkout flow, renewal reminders, cancellation steps and refund policy
How long does a review take?
There is no fixed time. A simple document review can take days. A model review can take longer and may end without a detailed explanation. Plan your cash flow as if the money will take weeks, and do not rely on a single processor for the whole business.
How should I answer an information request?
- Answer every question asked, in the same order
- Send clear, complete, unedited documents
- Keep names, addresses and dates consistent with your earlier submissions
- Reply once, completely, rather than in several partial messages
- Keep a log of what you sent and when
Which mistakes sink an appeal?
- Changing the story. A new explanation that contradicts the first one looks like concealment
- Attacking the reviewer or threatening legal action in the first message
- Sending edited or fabricated documents
- Pointing to other merchants who were allowed. Each account is judged on its own facts
- Opening a new account while the appeal is pending
When is it time to stop and move on?
If Stripe has said in writing that it cannot support your business model, and your business is on its prohibited list or clearly outside what it supports, further appeals rarely change the result. Collect any balance that is released, keep your records, and move to a processor whose rules fit the business. Spending months on a decision that will not change costs more than switching.
